Drum Booth Drums was created from the kit I used to record “Objects In Space” off of my first EP EVOLVE.

It was recorded in the tiny ISO Booth between my control room and live room with mainly 2 mics.  A kick mic (Heil PR48) and 1 mic for everything else (Roswell R8). I also had a pair of room mics (AT4080) in the live room that I didn't actually use for the recording but I’ve included them in Drum Booth Drums. The kit was smashed with the DIYRE 15ips and Trident Console so most of the tone was baked in while recording. 

The kick and toms are Ludwig Classic Maple and the Snare is a Ludwig 5x14 8 lug Black Beauty. I ended up tuning the 14x14 floor tom up to be the rack as well. I think it makes for some nice character with the toms.

When I sampled the kit I captured multiple versions of the snare using various muting materials to create a few different sounds. A couple of custom dampeners I've made from old drum heads and a fabric dampener made by my friends at Backbone Professional Drum Shop in Taipai. I also added a Shure M267 mixer to the signal chain. That is where the more crunchy sounds come from.  

Each sound has 5 velocites and 5 round robins. For reverb there are 10 custom Impulse Responses. Most lean towards the short side to stay with the ISO Booth concept but there are a couple medium-ish plates and one large hall type verb. 

The Channel Strips have a pretty full set of controls that allow you to really tweak the sounds. The “Transient” lets you really shape the sound. This control alone changes how the kit feels. 

“Tuning” allows you to tweak the pitch. I intentionally set it for two octaves up and down. It may sound like a lot (and it is) but I will often tune things waaaay down and layer them underneath other drums. I figured there is no way that I'm the only person that does this so yeah, you get two octaves of tuning. 

The “Room” knob is the AT4080 ribbon mics I had setup just inside the live room and is separate from the Reverb Send. It's a completely natural short ambience from the live room. 

The Kick channel has a dedication “Kick Sub” knob so you can dial in some extra low end. It's tight but it can get big!

There is a Saturation section for Drum Booth Drums as well. With 10 different selections you can really shape the overall sound of the kits just with the Saturation. All of them have their own character. 

The FX section consists of a Bit Crusher and a Warble. Bit Crushers are intriguing to me. You can get some really intense sounds with them but if you use them sparingly, and tweak the Blur & Grain settings, you can get some really neat textures that are wonderful when in context with music. If you have Tone Bells & Textures you may already be familiar with the Warble on the reverb & delay (it's on the reverb her too!). It's a Chorus like effect with I love using on drums. It can really have an impact on the width of the kit in a unique way and I love what it does to cymbals with long decay. A little goes a long way…unless you want a lot!

Last but definitely NOT least is the STEREO/MULTI-OUT modes. The default is STEREO but toggling the OUTPUT MODE button goes between STEREO and MULTI-OUT mode. Keep in mind, when in Multi-Out mode you get full control of everything except the FX and Saturation as they are bypassed. If you're working in Multi-Out mode you'll most likely be using your favorite FX.
